Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

This year will likely bring many challenges that we have not encountered in the past.  Jefferson Elementary is committed to creating a safe environment where we can maximize learning opportunities for our students.  The health and well-being of our students, teachers, and staff is our number one priority.

The Jefferson Area Local School District has created plans for in-person learning and online learning.  You can find those plans here:

2020-2021 In-Person School Opening Plan

2020-2021 Online Learning at Home Information

Additional building specific information, such as drop off/pick up adjustments will be shared once those plans are finalized.

We will continue with the safety and school environment initiatives that were begun last year in response to community engagement with parents, staff and students. This school year there will continue to be an armed security guard at Jefferson Elementary School.

We will also continue working on our implementation of PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports).  The intent of our PBIS process is to improve the overall school climate by teaching and rewarding appropriate behavior, providing consistent consequences for inappropriate behaviors, and creating a peaceful and uniform environment to increase academic achievement for all students.

Our PBIS program uses the acronym, S.O.A.R. to summarize for students the expectations and desired behaviors for all students. S.O.A.R. is described as:

Safety - everyone always needs to be safe

On Task - while in school remain on task

Always Respectful - be respectful of your peers, school staff, property, and yourself

Responsible - be responsible for yourself and make responsible decisions

To help in the implementation of the building PBIS initiative, a student & family behavior and case manager has been placed at Jefferson Elementary School to assist teachers in supporting at-risk or vulnerable students and their families. The case managers are hired through the Ashtabula CommunityCounseling Center. They are a non-profit behavioral health provider focused on engaging the community in recovery.

Academically, we continue to emphasize literacy through reading and writing across the curriculum. Our mathematics teachers will be exploring textbooks and materials to support our K-8 mathematics curriculum. We are working to improve the school district’s performance on state tests.

Teachers return for the opening day and professional development August 18-19, 2020.

Students will return on a staggered schedule as outlined in our return to school plan.
